Huipil (Wee-peel) is the Spanish term for the traditional blouse worn by Mayan women in Guatemala. It is the most significant part of her costume, and to the knowledgeable observer it identifies a women's village, social and marital status, religious background, wealth, and individual personality.

A well-woven huipil can last 20 to 30 years before it's sold at market and starts a second life as a rag, quilt, or handbag. Since these items are created from many different blouses, designs and styles will vary.

The fair wages the artisans receive improves their living conditions and helps build a better life for themselves and their families.

These beautiful journals are made entirely of recycled cotton paper, with two of them incorporating recycled Indian newspaper on the front cover design. The cotton used to make the paper is collected from the textile industry, turned into a pulp, and then turned into sheets of paper. This means they are tree-free and eco friendly!

There are three different designs to this journal. One has a dark blue cover with white and cyan butterflies printed on the front (JEB 579). It has a quote on the front: “Spread your wings,… just fly.”

The other two have a dark brown cover. One has a hand-ripped Indian newspaper (either in English or Hindi) that covers the bottom half of the front cover, with a lemon green hand painted silhouette of a plant on top (covering the entire front cover) (JEB 577). It has a quote on the back: “Rooted in the past, growing towards the future”.

The last one has the design of a flower covering the entire front cover, with the stem and the leaves painted by hand and the petals made of a single piece of newspaper (JEB 578). It has a quote on the back: “Every end has a new beginning.”

what is fair trade?

Fair trade is a just, economically and environmentally sound global cooperative between artisans, traders, farmers, buyers, and consumers. By selling directly to buyers in North America, producers in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and other developing countries receive a reasonable living wage for their goods instead of a low, undeserving price.

Workers and their families not only benefit, but the profits are often reinvested in the community to improve health and education. Communities learn the advantage of grassroots development and environmental sustainability. Fair trade builds relationships and encourages gender equality among the producers; the products preserve traditions and cultures. This partnership eliminates government intervention and inflated consumer costs.

Fair Trade Winds provides an outlet for consumers to buy these handicrafts and unique products from a diverse group of artisans. We promote businesses and farming practices that are environmentally sustainable.
