With so many visitors from all over the world every year, we decided to design a few products that would help people remember their trip to Bar Harbor and still represent the creative handcrafted work of the talented artisans we work with. We love the fact that fair trade organizations celebrate collaboration and creativity.
Can you guess what this little turtle ornament is made from? If you guessed tagua nuts, then you’re correct! Artisans in Ecuador take tagua nuts like the ones the turtle is swimming on and carve them into fun and festive ornaments and figurines. They come in all different animal shapes and they are all super cute!
These lovely purses our one of our top sellers in Bar Harbor! They are made from woven tatami grass by a company called Baskets of Cambodia, which is the same material Cambodians use to make their floor mats out of. The grass grows prevalently during the monsoon season so it is a sustainable material to use for purses.
Bar Harbor is definitely a special place for the Fair Trade Winds family. We love that it’s a small town, but people come from all over the world to visit and it’s the home of our first store. It’s great being part of a town that cares about its connection to the community as a whole, both the natural world and the people who inhabit it.
