Fall is here, and festively flavored coffee drinks have reappeared on coffee shop menus. The concoctions conjure memories of our favorite holiday desserts, and we imagine sitting by the fireplace in our cozy pajamas, inhaling the spicy-sweet aromas, and savoring each sip. But if the coffee isn’t fair trade, then we can’t enjoy it. The price is steep. And the other ingredients in the drinks are most likely not fair trade.
But don’t stop the Christmas soundtrack in your head just yet! Our holly jolly dreams are not shattered! You can make your own Fair Trade Gingerbread Latte at home for much less money and with much less guilt (year-round!) You can control the ingredients and make much more than just lattes with this recipe–it’s versatile and frugal. Thanks to Don’t Waste the Crumbs for the idea.
Here is the recipe for “Create your own Gingerbread [Anything]” using fair trade ingredients. We substituted fair trade, organic raw blue agave in this recipe for the maple syrup, so we used less than it calls for because agave is sweeter.
- 1 Tbsp plus 1 tsp fair trade ground ginger
- 2 tsp fair trade ground cinnamon
- ¼ tsp fair trade ground cloves
- pinch salt
- 1 tsp fair trade molasses
- 3/4 T fair trade agave (original recipe calls for 1 Tbsp maple syrup)
- ¼ tsp vanilla extract (optional)
- Combine spices in a small container with a lid; shake well.
- To make one serving of the gingerbread spice syrup, mix ¼ teaspoon of the dry spice mixture with molasses, agave, and vanilla. Stir well to combine and use in a variety of ways.
- The seasoning makes approximately 2 tablespoons worth, which yields 18-24 single servings. Save the container of spices to create a new batch for your next drink (or treat).
We drizzled this syrup on yogurt with dried fruit and nuts (yum!) Add to other breakfast favorites, too. Mix into granola, oatmeal, and pancake or waffle batter.
