Hand in Hand Soap
One huge benefit to purchasing fair trade is the knowledge that as a consumer, you not only get a quality product, but that you also actively participate in a process that ensures fair wages and a better quality of life for others around the world. Some companies push the fair trade concept even further, expanding the concept of equality and sustainability within their business to include even more far reaching benefits. Hand in Hand Soap is just one of those companies. Their work is a terrific example of the positive impact fair trade can have on a community – plus, their soap packaging is just so darn cute!
Who They Are
Started in 2011 by a married couple with a desire to start a business “based on sustainable giving,” Hand in Hand Soap is a company focused on a holistic approach to fair trade. Instead of starting with a product and then brainstorming it’s potential benefit, Courtney and Bill found a problem, and then figured out how they could help.
What They Do
Their mission? Reduce the number of deaths caused by poor water quality and lack of proper hygiene, which has climbed over a staggering 5 million people each year. One highly effective and simple way they found this could be achieved was through hand washing with soap, which, according to numerous studies, reduced water-related deaths by 45%.
Why We Love Them
For every bar of soap purchased, Hand in Hand donates a bar. The soap is distributed in collaboration with existing non-profit organizations that have identified individuals in need and have existing relationships in those communities. After it’s first distribution in Haiti in 2012, Hand in Hand has since donated over 65,000 bars of soap. With each bar of soap, they also donate 1 month of clean water to 1 person. In November of 2013, the company opened a well in Haiti, providing clean water to over 240 families.

Hand in Hand Soap also strives to be an environmentally responsible business, with all of their products being eco-friendly, biodegradable, sustainably harvested, cruelty free, palm oil free, and of course certified fair trade. In addition, for every product purchased, 50 square feet of rainforest (often cleared for palm oil) is saved through their collaboration with SeaCology.org.
If that wasn’t enough, the products from Hand in Hand stand alone; each bar is beautifully crafted and packaged. Their soap includes triple milled shea butter, and comes in 6 soothing scents (Lavender, Orange Blossom, White Tea, Rose Water, Sea Salt, and Wildflower & Fern). Be sure to try their bath salts and candles as well.
