Traditional Craft

Recycled telephone wire bowls are a modern twist on traditional woven baskets from South Africa. Zulu artisans sit together in small groups, building community and working to make a better future for their families.

Prior to the launch of this wire weaving project, unemployment in the region was near 80%. Today, 500 Zulu families work with the project. They buy the wire on credit and then work from their homes at their own pace. These economic opportunities are slowly but surely transforming the community while preserving the artistic tradition.
