What is Kantha?

Kantha is one of India's oldest textile traditions — it’s a form of embroidered quilting where artisans layer pieces of reclaimed fabric and stitch them together using a simple running stitch.

Today, the Kantha technique has been embraced by the fair trade movement as a powerful way to reduce textile waste while creating meaningful livelihoods for women artisans in India.

At Fair Trade Winds, we're proud to carry Kantha apparel made by artisan cooperatives that ensure fair wages, safe working conditions, and lasting community impact.

Why Upcycled Sari Fashion?

The fashion industry is one of the world's largest polluters — and most of that impact comes at the production stage, before a garment even reaches a store. Upcycled sari clothing sidesteps much of that by starting with fabric that already exists. Reclaimed sari textiles are given a second life through the Kantha quilting process.

Impacts of Sustainable Fashion

Less waste. Every Kantha garment starts with repurposed fabric, diverting textile waste from landfills and reducing the demand for new raw material production.

More meaning. Saris are deeply important objects in Indian culture. When that fabric is woven into a kimono jacket or a sundress, the history of the textile becomes part of the garment.

Real impact. We works with women artisan cooperatives in India, providing fair wages, skills training, and economic independence. Your purchase directly supports that mission.

Upcycled Sari Clothing FAQs

Upcycled sari clothing is made from repurposed sari fabric — the traditional Indian textile used to make saris — that has been given new life through the Kantha quilting technique. Rather than being discarded, the fabric is layered and hand-stitched by artisans into new garments like jackets, dresses, robes, and tops.

Kantha is a traditional South Asian needlework technique that involves layering pieces of fabric and stitching them together with a simple running stitch. The word comes from Sanskrit and roughly translates to “patched cloth.”

Our Upcycled Sari garments are designed with relaxed, one-size or multi-size fits. Check the individual product pages for specific sizing information and measurements.

Most of our cotton Kantha garments can be machine-washed on a gentle cold cycle. Lay flat or hang to dry to preserve the fabric and stitching. Avoid high heat in the dryer. Check each product page for specific care instructions.

Yes — it's one of the most genuinely sustainable forms of fashion available. By starting with repurposed sari fabric rather than new raw materials, Kantha clothing reduces textile waste, lowers the environmental impact of production, and supports a circular approach to fashion. Combine that with fair trade labor practices and you have a garment that's good for people and the planet.

If you're looking for sustainable fashion that goes beyond a recycled polyester label, upcycled Kantha clothing is one of the most genuinely circular choices you can make. Upcycled sari clothing is sustainable fashion with something to say.

Wear it knowing exactly where it came from, who made it, and why it matters.
